Woman scores $180,000 payday after spotting hidden unclaimed cash on little-known ‘property’ site

A WOMAN has scored a $180,000 payday after discovering unclaimed money thanks to one state’s website.

The Florida resident had no idea she was still owed stock dividends from a job she worked decades ago.

She eventually recovered it through Florida’s Unclaimed Property website, according to Fox 2.

Florida isn’t the only state with such a site – every U.S. state has its own unclaimed property website in some form.

Unclaimed money and property can come from bank accounts, uncashed checks, valuables left in safe deposit boxes and stock certificates.

When these assets sit dormant, they’re transferred to the Michigan Department of Treasury, where they can later be claimed by their owners.

The amounts vary – from as little as $50 to thousands of dollars.

How to claim property?

To find unclaimed property, head to your state’s official unclaimed property website and search your name.

This will bring up a list of results under your name or similar names.

If you spot a match, select the property and enter your details, including your name, Social Security number and address.

In some cases, this is enough for the claim to be approved.

But in other cases, you may be asked to submit proof, including a copy of your ID or Social Security card.

Even if you’re unsure whether the property belongs to you – for example, if it matches someone with the same name – you’re still allowed to file a claim.

If a website asks for payment, leave immediately, warns Fox 2.

Once a claim is submitted, you’ll receive a claim ID, which can be used to track its status online.

In Florida, some claims may require up to five levels of approval before the funds or property are released.

It comes after a couple hit a stroke of luck, scoring $1 million from a scratch-off lottery ticket they picked up on a whim.

In a recent episode of The Ramsey Show, a woman named Sarah from Chicago, Illinois, called in seeking guidance on how she and her husband should approach their newfound wealth.

She explained that a few weeks prior, her husband bought a random scratch-off lottery ticket from a local gas station, racing home in excitement when he saw it was a $1 million winner.

The couple agreed to take the lump sum option with a one-time $600,000 payment, which Sarah estimated would drop to a little over $400,000 once taxes were withheld.
